Understanding the Artificial Grass Installation Process

I think it’s important to understand the installation process when considering artificial grass for your space.

Our process begins with thorough site preparation, clearing vegetation, and properly compacting the ground. We then lay down a weed barrier fabric topped with crushed rock to ensure stability.

Once the turf is acclimated, our skilled team carefully unrolls, trims, and aligns it with precision. Effectively securing the turf and understanding the role of infill are crucial for achieving the final appearance.

These steps are vital in ensuring a flawless finish for your project, reflecting our unwavering commitment to quality and attention to detail. You can rest assured that your artificial grass installation will be nothing short of perfect.

Site Preparation

Proper site preparation is not just a step, it’s a crucial foundation for a successful artificial grass installation. It ensures a smooth installation and the longevity of the turf, keeping you informed about the necessary steps for a lasting result.

Begin by thoroughly assessing the area where the artificial grass will be installed:

Clear the Site

Remove all grass, plants, rocks, and debris with a shovel or sod cutter. This prevents future uneven surfaces and drainage issues.

Check for roots or large stones that could impact the installation.

Excavate the Soil

Dig down about 3–4 inches to create space for the base layer.

Compact the Ground

Use a plate compactor to establish a firm foundation, preventing shifting and settling over time.

Install a Weed Barrier Fabric

Lay a weed barrier fabric to stop unwanted growth beneath the turf, maintaining a clean and low-maintenance surface.

Spread Crushed Rock or Gravel

Apply 2–3 inches of angular crushed rock or gravel for proper drainage and enhanced turf durability.

Compact the Layer

Compact this layer thoroughly to ensure a solid and smooth base for the artificial grass.

Ensure Level Surface

Check that the surface is level with a slight slope for water runoff, directing it away from the turf to prevent pooling.

Double-Check Measurements

Before installation, we meticulously double-check all measurements. This attention to detail saves time and effort, ensuring a precise and professional result.

By carefully preparing the site, we can ensure a successful artificial grass installation that will look great and function well for years.

Laying the Artificial Turf

Once we’ve prepared the site, it’s time to lay the artificial turf carefully.

Unroll the Turf

Carefully unroll the grass, ensuring all fibres face the same direction for a uniform appearance.

Acclimate the Turf

To reduce wrinkles, allow the turf to acclimate for about 24 hours, keeping it flat.

Align the Edges

After acclimating, align the edges of turf sections without overlapping. Proper alignment is essential for a seamless finish.

Trim Excess Material

We use a sharp utility knife to trim excess material, ensuring a snug fit around obstacles. Straightedges help achieve clean lines and prevent frayed edges.

Address Seams

Leave a small gap of approximately 3-4mm (1/8 inch) between seams to create a seamless appearance. This gap will be filled later to blend the pieces.

Final Adjustments

Take a step back to assess the installation after trimming and aligning. This final stage is crucial, ensuring a polished look and a successful installation.

Proper installation contributes to the durability and longevity of your artificial grass, allowing you to enjoy its benefits for years to come.

Securing and Finishing

Now that your artificial lawn is aligned correctly and the seams are expertly prepared, it’s time to secure the synthetic grass. We take great care during this process to guarantee a smooth and seamless finish.

Securing the Perimeter

For stability, drive landscape spikes or nails around the perimeter every 15 cm (6 inches). Insert each nail at an angle to prevent shifting.

Focusing on the Seams

Apply strong outdoor adhesive along the seam tape, pressing the turf edges together to eliminate gaps. Maintain tension to keep seams tight and virtually invisible.

Applying Infill

Apply infill using a drop spreader. This will evenly weigh down the grass, support the blades, and improve drainage.

Brushing the Turf

After the infill is applied, brush the turf with a stiff-bristle broom to work it into the fibres. This helps the blades stand upright, giving the turf a fuller, natural look.

By following these steps, we ensure a high-quality, durable artificial lawn that enhances your garden and provides enjoyment for years to comet
